Today’s destination is Mai Chau. From Hanoi City, we ride 40km more on highway 21B to cut through the road NH21B and finally meet Highway 6. Once arriving on this highway, we head straightforward to Mai Chau. Before setting our foot at our final destination Mai Chau, we will have a quick stop at Da Trang and Thung Khe Pass to rest and take some nice shots.
Located on Thung Khe Pass, Mai Chau is known as a small yet beautiful valley that is home to many villages of the Thai ethnic minority. The old stilt houses remain intact and form a population of stilt houses in the valley, creating a signature beauty of Mai Chau. There are few tourist attractions in Mai Chau; it still owns special attractions that include poetic beauty, cool fresh air, unique culture, and typical culinary features.
The first day of the Off-road Vietnam Dirt Bike Tour from Hanoi to Vu Linh via Son La ends with an overnight rest at a lovely homestay in Mai Chau.

After a hearty breakfast, we say goodbye to peaceful Mai Chau valley and continue our excursion of exploring Northwest Vietnam by riding towards Son La. Today is promised to bring many great memories of riding and experiencing the daily life of Hmong and Black Thai people in Son La. Son La is a province in the Northwest region of Vietnam that borders Laos to the south. If traveling to Son La in spring, you will have the chance to admire the beauty of cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, and apricot flowers on the hills and mountains.
Lunch is served at a local eatery as we come closer to Moc Chau valley, Son La. When arriving at Moc Chau, you will be amazed by the immense ever-green tea field on the hillside, known as the largest growing tea area in Vietnam. It’s expected to reach Son La in the early evening. Check in at a local homestay, and we go for dinner and walk around.

Today will be a rather long riding day, about 200km. However, it will be a great chance for you to leverage your riding skills via mountain roads and challenging off-road trails. On the way to Muong Lay, we can stop by a few times to photoshoot majestic mountains and friendly indigenous people and enjoy some fresh air of nature.
After having lunch with delicious local dishes, our next stop will be Pha Din pass, located on National Highway 6, connecting Son La and Dien Bien provinces. The top of the pass is a junction between old and new roads, where riders often stop by to enjoy and buy local specialties. From here, we will have a panorama view of the majestic mountains and immense ever-green forest – a masterpiece of nature. As passing Pha Din, our crew will arrive at Muong Lay. Here, we spend our third night at a local homestay and prepare for the next day.

If we have time, don’t mind stopping by the Yao or Hmong town to take a little break and photoshoot. We will reach Lai Chau in the early evening and check in at a standard hotel to have dinner and overnight.

Today’s route from Lai Chau to Sapa will surely highlight the 7-day Vietnam dirt bike tour, especially for riders expecting some real challenging off-road tracks, mountain roads, and sharp bends. Be prepared for some roads that are in bad condition. On the way to Sapa, we will cross through one of the four greatest passes in Vietnam named O Quy Ho. With a length of nearly 50 km, O Quy Ho Pass holds the record for the longest pass in Vietnam. The length, altitude, and danger of O Quy Ho make the mountain known unofficially as “king of the Northwest Pass”.
The closer you are to Sapa, the earlier you meet Heaven Gate in Sapa. About 18km from Sapa town center to the North, it is an ideal place for visitors to admire and feel the magnificent and pristine beauty of the Hoang Lien Son range and the Northwest mountain forest. The road to the heavenly gate is craggy with many sharp bends, narrow roads, and cliffs. Although the path is quite dangerous, the heaven gate attracts tourists, especially adventurous riders who want to experience challenging roadways. The 5th night of the 7-day off-road Vietnam dirt bike tour from Hanoi to Vu Linh via Son La will be spent at a standard hotel in Sapa town.
Summary:
Distance: 170 km

Leaving peaceful Sapa town, we ride down Lao Cai and pass Thac Ba lake. The road from Sapa to Luc Yen in good condition is fairly easy to ride for any biker. When arriving at Thac Ba lake, we can opt for another road that runs through Yao and Tay villages to reach Vu Linh. We will have dinner and stay overnight at a Yao family’s homestay. Don’t forget to try some tasty local dishes and traditional rice wine here, or you will regret it.
