North Vietnam Motorbike Tour from Hanoi to Halong Bay – 15 Days

With this off-road tour, we recommend bikers use Honda motorbikes from 125cc to 150cc. Our itinerary for Day 1 is Hanoi – Xuan Mai – Luong Son – Hoa Binh – Muong Khen – Mai Chau. This route is the shortest and fastest way to get to Mai Chau. After breakfast, we leave Hanoi for our destination. We have a few stops along the way to rest, enjoy coffee and boiling corn and buy souvenirs. We get to Mai Chau in the late afternoon, then head to our homestay, unpack our bags, and get ready for dinner.

We start the morning with a motorbike ride through the winding mountain passes that pass through rustic villages of the Thai, Tay, and Muong ethnic people who plant corn, sugarcane, and green tea in the terraced fields. After having a light and joyful motorbike ride, we eat lunch and follow the smooth road to Son La province. We recommend bikers stop at some colorful local markets to experience and learn about the local tradition and culture.

We arrive at the city at 4 pm, have a quick rest, and take a short walk to the hell-on-earth Son La former prison where famous Vietnamese political prisoners were captured during French colonialism. A trip to the prison gives visitors an insight into the Vietnam war against French colonialism.

Say goodbye to Son La; we will get on a medium track. Ride along the Pha Din Pass; you will see more of the serenity of indigenous villages and the simple life of rustic ethnic people. The village we pop in today is Tham Village – one of the most splendid villages in the district. To get there, we have to ride through a dark tunnel of 2 km in length, which will give you one of the greatest parts full of emotion in this off-road Vietnam Dirt Bike Tour.

Drop in the historical remnants of the French battlefield during the Indochina War – Dien Bien Province. We will come to Tham Pua Cave at the foot of Pu Hong Cay Limestone. The cave (about 100m high) is a historical and cultural relic with immense value in Dien Bien Province. People have explored various vestiges believed to be ancient Vietnamese relics.

The next spot is 100m away from Nam Hua Stream – Tham Temple. Covered by the bushes, it’s hard for tourists to find the place without a tour guide. Get back your energy for the next day with a tight sleep in Tuan Giao.

After bidding farewell to the lovely town of Dien Bien, we ride along the Da River, enjoying the amazing view between the limestone mountain and the crystal clear river. We then ride upwards to Sin Ho town, located at 1500m above sea level. From here, we can have a panoramic view of the whole town; a vast green area dotted with little houses with red roofs. Local villages of the Dao, Thai, or Lu ethnic people are must-visit destinations here. If you come by on the right day, you can see colorful markets on local hills. After having lunch in Sin Ho, we drive downwards to head to Lai Chau – a short but scenic ride.

We start the Sapa motorbike tour at around 9:00 am to ensure the morning mist disappears, and the sky is clearer. On this sixth day of our 15-day motorbike tour, we experience the second pass in the top four of Vietnam – the O Quy Ho pass. We drive from Lai Chau to Sapa and arrive at the destination at lunchtime. In the afternoon, we can either walk around Sapa or take a short motorcycle tour around the beautiful Muong Hoa valley to capture the picture-postcard rice terraced fields or visit more villages of the Dao and H’Mong ethnic people. Accommodation in Sapa is easy to find; tourists can choose to stay at a hotel in town or book a homestay with local ethnic people in Ta Van village.

It takes about three hours to drive from Sapa to Bac Ha. There is a place where you can take photos with China as a background on the 34 km trip from Sapa to Lao Cai. On the sixth day, you will move from Bac Ha to Ha Giang for about six hours. Firstly, you go on the trip to Xin Man with many small roads. After that, return to the majestic mountains before taking the main road to Ha Giang. You will stop in Ha Giang to stay overnight and apply for a permit.

After having a lovely breakfast at the guesthouse, we take a leisure stroll around the town, visiting colorful markets (only on weekends) and seeing well-preserved ancient houses built some 200 years ago. We start our trip at 9:30 am to Dong Van, riding in the famous rock plateau or the Dong Van global geopark and then passing by the Ma Pi Leng pass – one of the longest and most beautiful passes in northern Vietnam. In the afternoon, we travel downhill along the Nho Que and Gam rivers. The beautiful day ends at the hotel on the riverbank of the Bao Lac town at 4:30 pm.

Your trip from Bao Lac to Cao Bang will last about eight hours, including five hours for riding a motorbike and three hours for break time with food and drinks. The road is easy to ride, but there are many blind bends. On the way to Cao bang, you can stop very often to take nice photos. For the night, you will stay in a hotel.

You will have a motorbike tour on mainly both off-road and back-road roads from Cao Bang to Quang Uyen, which is considered one of the most remote places in Vietnam. Its landscape is mostly unaffected by external impacts. Moreover, you can see the most beautiful waterfall called Ban Gioc, which is close to the border between Vietnam and China. Enjoy your time and the natural beauty by taking a short walk or having a picnic. The first impression when coming to Bac Son valley is the fresh and cool climate, pleasant and wild scenery of rocky mountains, and wandering roads.

In the morning, you will have time to relax after a long trip. After that, there are two options for you. For the first option, you can take a group trip by boat to Ha Long Bay at noon; enjoy kayaking and swimming on the trip to the Surprising Cave. A luxurious Vietnamese menu will be served on the boat for lunch. For evening activities, you can choose to enjoy a movie, sing karaoke or join squid fishing with the crew. The food for dinner will be Vietnamese food. For the second option, you can book a private boat or cruise on Ha Long Bay and stay at night there. The trip from Halong Bay to Hanoi is the last one on the Vietnam Motorbike Tours. You will ride for about five hours. You can choose one of the two options. The first option is to move on the boat to Titov Island. You can swim or just relax there, then return to Bai Chay. Your lunch will be served at Thang Long restaurant in Ha Long city or on the boat. For the second option, you will continue exploring Halong Bay, have lunch on the boat and return at noon. However, this option costs extra. If you want to choose this option, BM Travel Adventure will tell you the cost. After that, you will return to Hanoi on Highway 18 and then 1B and be there around 5 p.m.
