Tiger 1200

1. Review

Heavyweight adventure bikes are designed to eat miles and conquer the terrain. The task appears straightforward, but balancing the needs of tarmac and terrain is a delicate art. Most manufacturers favor one side of the on/off-road divide. On the other hand, the 2023 Triumph Tiger 1200 divides the field, catering to long-distance road trippers with the GT series and brave explorers with the Rally versions.

Triumph Tiger 1200 review

The renovated Tiger 1200 didn't only adopt a new persona; it also went on a crash diet, claiming to lose 55 pounds. Triumph adapted the 1,160cc inline triple from the 2022 Speed Triple 1200 RS. You have one capable cat with a lightweight trellis frame, a cast-aluminum Tri-Link swingarm with final shaft drive, and Showa semi-active suspension.

Onroad

The engine is, of course, the following notable feature. For something this large and hefty, the steering seemed surprisingly agile while driving around twisty hills. Transitioning from side to side is easier than you think, and riding a bike along a fast, smooth road is a lot of fun. But the Tiger 1200 shines off the beaten path. This resulted in more vibration transmitted through the machine, but not enough to bother the rider during the trip.

The Showa suspension does an excellent job; it effortlessly eats through rocky, rutted, and broken roads, allowing you to travel at a high rate of speed without the bike becoming unbalanced. With its dirt-bike-sized 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear wheel, it remains stable.

Off-road on the rally pro

The Tiger 1200 Rally Pro impresses this area. Selecting Off-road mode at startup will release the rear brake from ABS intervention, increase front ABS intervention, and slacken traction control. That is enough to let go of the rear end at will, set the suspension to off-road mode, and adjust throttle response between the sportiest and least sporty Road mode.

Set the throttle map to Road for a slightly softer response, adjust the suspension damping one level harder than standard, and turn off traction control to be able to negotiate the steep, slick ascents. The suspension is impressive, to put it simply. Although the Rally Pro can react fast to avoid obstacles. The Rally Pro is very forgiving on reasonably difficult terrain; it responds quickly to steering inputs and feels more like a middleweight adventure bike than a big-bore 1200. This is not surprising considering that it weighs about 40 pounds more than the Tiger 900 but produces a full 54 horsepower more.

2. Highlights

Triumph's liquid-cooled, 12-valve, 1,160cc inline-Triple engine powers the Tiger 1200. The Tiger has the same bore, stroke, and compression ratio as the Speed Triple 1200 RS, but it has its personality thanks to a 270-degree crank, a 1-3-2 piston firing order, and a shaft final drive. These preparations ready the Tiger 1200 for life on and off the main path. it makes up for in character. Between 4,000 and 7,000 rpm, the engine emits a bellicose growl, and it roars up to its 9,500 rpm redline.

And I quickly adjusted my input to the situation. conditions. Triumph’s ride modes also help tame the Tiger.

Triumph Tiger 1200 Highlights

All models include standard Road, Rain, and Sport ride modes, which change the Triple's personality accordingly. Off-Road and Rider (custom) modes are added to the GT Pro and GT Explorer, while the Rally Pro and Rally Explorer go a step further by including an Off-Road Pro mode. Each mode tailors the Tiger's throttle response, damping settings, ABS, and traction control to the situation at hand, allowing the big-bore ADV to adapt to any situation.

With usable power and increased ABS and TC intervention, the Road and Rain modes live up to their names. In Sport mode, the Tiger bears its teeth with a stiffened suspension, reduced traction control, and a quick throttle response that encourages a brisk pace. While Off-Road lowers the thresholds for traction control and ABS activation, Off-Road Pro disables both systems for complete freedom. Riders can quickly switch between ride modes while the Tiger is in motion by using a dedicated button on the left switchgear.
