Inspired by the classic 1960s Interceptor, which had its largest following on the American west coast and fit perfectly into the easy-going, fun narrative of the time, the new Interceptor 650 Twin reimagines the sun-drenched California beach lifestyle. This modern classic combines the spirit of a British roadster with a dash of a California Desert Racer, mixing timeless design and current performance.
This 650cc twin-cylinder engine delivers 47 horsepower, a significant departure for Royal Enfield, which has been confined to modest single-cylinder engines for over 60 years. The gorgeous Interceptor is traditional and graceful, with dimensions close to the GT 535 and a very similar chassis. The Royal Enfield 650, slim and elegant, maybe the Triumph Bonneville's younger sister.
Royal Enfield is the oldest motorbike brand still in production today, and we rode the company's current 650cc Interceptor to see how it compares in the twenty-first century.
The Enfield Cycle Company, based in Redditch, produced its first motorcycle in 1901 and, 30 years later, it developed the single-cylinder Bullet, which became the world's longest-running motorcycle manufacturer.
The UK firm, which marketed motorcycles under the Royal Enfield brand, went bankrupt in 1967, but the Bullet heritage lived on. The design, which was already widely known in the British colonies, had been accepted by the newly independent Indian government for use by police and the military. Bullets were manufactured under license in Madras (now Chennai) beginning in 1955, originally in kits imported from the United Kingdom until tooling was transferred over in 1962.
In India, the model was a big success. It was the ultimate prestige symbol for Indian bikers and was widely distributed to individuals and government institutions. Some were also shipped to the United Kingdom, and in 1990, the brand was purchased by the massive Eicher Motors business, which manufactures buses and trucks. It was significant.
